**Key takeaways**

- Falconry Scale is a weight log for falconers on iPhone, Android and the web, free for up to three birds.
- Start by adding your bird, then set its flying window, then log your first weigh-in.
- Every weigh-in is checked against the bird's own window the moment you save it.
- After a week of weigh-ins the charts, forecast and feeding suggestions start to work for you.

**Falconry Scale is a weight log built for falconers: you add a bird, set its flying window, and every weigh-in is checked against that window the moment you save it.** This guide takes you from download to your first useful weigh-in in about five minutes, on your phone or on the web.

## What you need

- An iPhone, an Android phone, or a computer for the [web app](https://app.falconryscale.com).
- Your usual scale. Any scale that reads to the gram works; read [how to weigh a hawk accurately](/blog/gear-and-tech/how-to-weigh-a-hawk) if you want to tighten your routine.
- Your bird's details. Only the name, species and sex are needed to start.

## Set up your first bird

1. **Create your account.** Download the app or open the web app, then sign up. Your records sync between your phone and the web.
2. **Add your first bird.** In the Raptors tab, add the bird with its name, species and sex. Ring number, microchip, hatch date and photos can wait.
3. **Set the flying window.** Enter the range of weights in which your bird flies well. If you do not know it yet, leave a wide range and narrow it as you learn.
4. **Log your first weigh-in.** Weigh the bird before food, enter the weight to the gram and save. The app tells you at once whether it sits above, inside or below the window.
5. **Make it a routine.** Set feed times and reminders so a weigh-in never gets skipped, and check Today on the Home tab each morning.

The app knows 67 species across eight families, with subspecies, hybrids and CITES data, so choose the species before anything else. It shapes the sensible ranges and the alerts the app offers you.

The flying window is the range of weights in which your bird flies well. If you are not sure what that means for your bird, read [what flying weight is and how to find it](/blog/weight-and-condition/what-is-flying-weight) first. You can change the window at any time, and you will, as the season and the bird's fitness change.

## Your first weigh-in

Weigh the bird before food, as you always do, and type the number. A slipped decimal is caught before it is saved, so 8924 g on a peregrine will not quietly ruin your chart.

The result shows the weight against the bird's window straight away: above, inside or below, and by how much. Add a short note about how the bird looks and behaves. Over a few weeks, those notes are what turn numbers into knowledge.

## What happens after a week

Once a bird has seven days of weigh-ins, more of the app starts to help:

- **Charts** from 7 days to a year, with the flying window shaded. Free shows the last 30 days.
- **Feeding suggestions** (Pro) based on the bird's own weight trend.
- **Weight alerts** for a sudden drop, scaled to the size of the bird, or when it leaves the range you set.
- **The ready-by forecast**: grams per hour from the bird's own history, and the time it should reach flying weight.

When you need to bring a bird down, the bring-down plan keeps any drop to no more than 1.5 percent a day, over at least seven days.

## Make it a habit

Set feed times so the app reminds you 15 minutes before each feed, and turn on the morning summary if you like a single view of the day. The Home tab shows who still needs weighing and who is ready to fly. If a bird has not been weighed for 48 hours, the app gives you a gentle nudge.

Working with others? The Team plan lets you and up to four falconers share birds, with roles for owners, admins, members and viewers. See every plan on the [pricing page](/pricing) and every feature on the [features page](/features).

## Questions falconers ask

**Is Falconry Scale free?**

Yes, for up to three birds, with no card needed. Free includes daily weigh-ins against each bird's flying window and charts of the last 30 days. Pro adds unlimited birds, the full history and more document storage, with a 7-day free trial. See the pricing page for every plan.

**Do I need a Bluetooth scale?**

No. You type the weight from any scale you already use. A Falconry Scale Bluetooth scale is in development and is not for sale yet, so for now the app works with the scale you have.

**Can I use it on my computer?**

Yes. The web app at app.falconryscale.com uses the same account and records as the phone app, and adds a board with every bird on one screen, a weigh-in checklist and keyboard shortcuts.

**What if I do not know my bird's flying weight yet?**

Set a wide window to begin with and keep weighing every day with a short note on behaviour. After two or three weeks the days the bird flew best show you the real window, and you can narrow it in the bird's settings.
